Alumnus and mining entrepreneur Robert M. Buchan donated an unprecedented $10 million to The Queen’s Department of Mining Engineering.
It is the greatest sole contribution to mining education in Canadian history and may help push the progression of the global mineral resource market. In acknowledgement for this spectacular contribution, the department shall be renamed the Buchan Department of Mining.
As one of Canada’s prominent engineering organizations and a global leader in mining certification, principal Tom Williams claims that Mr. Buchan’s kindness will allow them to build on Queen’s endless culture of brilliance.
In response to a predicted lack of engineers, an $8 million endowment will fund and enhance academic and staff jobs, while $2 million goes into support of innovative student-focused programs and curriculum development, class components and distance-learning infrastructure.
Mr. Buchan said the department is promoting the sector’s up coming generation of leaders. Providing them with the best attainable education assures the Canadian mineral market has a sustainable and bright future in this swiftly evolving worldwide mineral resources industry.
Queen’s Department of Mining Engineering is one of the biggest in North America and dates back to 1893. The gift will enable it to continue to produce extraordinary professionals and scholars for a sustainable worldwide economy, since their vision is to excel in industrial education and recovery of the planet’s mineral resources.
One other donation for mining and legal courses was obtained by the premier institute of Western University. A generous contribution from a graduate will help the law school at Western University to dig deeper into the subject of mining law and finance.
Stephen Dattels, who graduated from the law school in 1972, is donating $1.5 million to assist Western University law students improve Canada’s mining sector.
Dattels was a critical executive in the early years of Barrick Gold Corp. He was an active director and executive in a number of international mining corporations and now serves as chief executive and executive co-chair of Polo Resources Ltd. and West African Minerals Corp.
The latest donation will assist a series of visiting speakers in mining finance and law and a fellowship in mining finance and law.
The contribution strengthens on Dattels’ previous donations to Western Law that have enhanced a program in mining finance and law and a chair in corporate finance law.
Stephen Dattels is a past pupil of the school, having graduated in law in the seventies, his $1.5m donation should help others become leaders in the country’s mining market like him.
